RU students protest attack on fellow student, give 2-day ultimatum
Miscreants stabbed a Rajshahi University (RU) student in Binodpur area, adjacent to the university, early today.
The injured, Saffat Nayeem Nafi (22), was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) from where he was referred to a Dhaka hospital for better treatment.
Nafi (22) is a 2nd-year student of RU's physics department, reports our RU correspondent.
Protesting the attack on Nafi, around 100 students staged a sit-in -- for one and a half hours -- in front of RU vice-chancellor's office from 10am today.
The protesting students have given the administration a two-day ultimatum to identify the miscreants and take legal action against them. They also threated for a tougher movement if the demands are not met within the given time.
Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar, vice-chancellor of RU, said, "We will take action and bring the culprit to justice very soon."
The university authorities will bear the cost of Nafi's medical expenses, the VC said.
RU Proctor, Prof Dr Asabul Haque, said that the incident took place around 12:15 am today.
Nafi's classmate Ibrahim, who was present at the scene, said, "The incident was completely unexpected. Last night, we went to NR hostel. When we were about to leave the hostel, some people attacked us near the main gate."
The RU proctor said, "As soon as we learned about it, the student advisor and I went to the spot. Nafi was rushed to the hospital. Police are trying to identify and detain the miscreants."
However, Anwar Ali Tuhin, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said, "We haven't received a written complaint yet."
