Remembering Abul Kalam Mohammed Zakaria

Eminent scholar, archaeologist and historian, Abul Kalam Mohammed Zakaria was recently remembered on his 100th birthday by a committee to publish books on the architectural sites in Dhaka, at the Experimental Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He was the former president of the editorial board of the organisation.

In front of the Experimental Hall, a photo exhibition -showcasing special moments of the beloved scholar's life - was held. Times when he met Indira Gandhi, visited archaeological sites in Old Dhaka, and moments he spent with his family – were all captured in the photos.

His colleagues, friends and family members were present at the event, where his daughters reminisced their childhood with their father. “I am overwhelmed to see the way he is loved and remembered by all,” said his youngest daughter Sufia Zakariah.

A cultural programme was also held to pay tribute to the scholar. However, special attraction of the event was Jogir Gaan – something that Abul Kalam Mohammed Zakaria was very enthusiastic about. Toser Mondal and his group Jogir Gaan from Natore lit up the environment with their performance. They entertained the audience for four long hours.

Kamaluddin Kabir, Professor, Department of Theatre, Jagannath University, spoke about a brief history of Jogir Gaan. He hopes that through this event, the younger generation will be inspired to know more about this form of art.
