Two telefilms titled #metoo coming this Eid
The #metoo movement has been quite a revelation, with women finding courage to expose their harassers through the power of social media. A lot of debate had also sparked regarding well-known people in the society.
To some extent, the movement has helped victims of harassment in Bangladesh as well, as well as spread awareness about the actual gravity of the situation. Two telefilms, both titled #metoo, will be released this Eid, attempting to portray the struggles of women who are victims of harassment by the least likely perpetrators.
The first, directed by Imraul Rafat, stars Mehazabien Chowdhury as the lead character. The film will star Mehazabien as a young student. “We have a series planned on the subject,” says Rafat. “It will not just revolve around sexual harassment. We will also talk about the injustice and violence that women of all walks face in the society.” This telefilm will be broadcast on Channel i this Eid.
The latter #metoo, directed by Sazzad Shuman stars Nusrat Imrose Tisha as the lead character. “My story revolves around a university student, who faces a rather adverse situation,” says Shuman. Very few people believe her complaint, as Tisha’s character fights an uphill battle for justice.
Even though both telefilms portray similar subjects, one can expect both to be unique in their own way, as both directors have different styles. To take up such a sensitive subject and tell a story based on it is a gargantuan task in itself, and both Imraul Rafat an Sazzad Shuman deserve credit for their attemps. Any kind of exposure to the movement will go a long way towards raising awareness about sexual harassment and violence.
Only time will tell which Eid special will capture the essence of the very sensitive #metoo movement, and do justice to the struggles of the victim fighting for justice in a difficult environment. Ultimately, it will be up to the viewers to decide on the better telefilm.
