‘Zootopia’ tramples rivals, nears $600m worldwide

With an impressive $64.8million weekend in 50 markets, Disney’s Zootopia ruled at the international box office.

The weekend success lifted the animated to nearly $600 million worldwide, reports Variety.

More than half of the “Zootopia” take this weekend came from China, where the comedy has taken in $173.4 million since its March 4 opening — within $30 million of the US total, reports Variety.

France leads the rest of the world with $25.4 million, followed by Russia with $24.9 million, Germany with $19.2 million and Korea with $18.1 million.

“Zootopia” opened Thursday in Australia and Brazil. Major markets still to come include the UK on March 25 and Japan on April 23.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” finished second on comScore’s international box office chart this weekend with $36 million in 25 markets with nearly all of that — $33 million — coming from China. “The Revenant” is nearing $500 million in worldwide box office gross, reports Variety.

“Kung Fu Panda 3” remained a player with $31.8 million this weekend internationally with first-place openings in Italy ($3.8 million), Germany ($2.1 million), Hong Kong ($1.4 million) and Argentina, Vietnam and United Arab Emirates — all with $1.2 million each. Its second weekend led in Mexico and the UK.

The DreamWorks title, distributed by Fox, has hit $257 million internationally and opens next weekend in Belgium, Australia, New Zealand and Mongolia. “Kung Fu Panda 3” has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide.

As in the United States, “Zootopia” overshadowed “The Divergent Series: Allegiant,” which came in third with $22 million in 78 markets. “Allegiant,” the third film in the franchise, began rolling out last weekend in international markets and has grossed $53.4 millon internationally, led by $5 million in France.

To mitigate its risk on the $110 million project, Liosngate pre-sold the international rights to “Allegiant,” which is handled by an array of distributors.

“London Has Fallen” came in fifth place with $10 million in 44 markets, lifting its foreign total to $45 million. The Focus Features thriller has taken in $50 million in the US in three weeks.
