The other side of SAMIR HAFIZ
Arguably one of the most versatile guitarists in the country, Samir Hafiz plays for Warfaze, Powersurge, AvoidRafa, Shrapnel Method and Severe Dementia. However, behind the man associated with killer riffs and immaculate guitar solos, is a kind-hearted and lively young man. He gives us some interesting facts about himself in today's interview with The Daily Star.
What music are you listening to right now?
I have been listening to Jinjer, a female-fronted Ukrainian metal band which I've followed for a long time. Their vocalist is, in my opinion, one of the best in the world. I also can't get enough of London Grammar, a 'dream' pop band from Nottingham. Their music is very atmospheric. Honestly, I am not bound by genres when it comes to music, I listen to whichever sounds good to my ears.
You've played a lot of guitars over the years. Which one is your favourite?
It's very difficult for me to pinpoint a favourite, but my 'Schecter Damien Platinum FR-S' guitar will hold a special place in my heart. It has a special feature called the 'sustainiac', with which I can do many neat guitar tricks.
If you were given a choice to play for one band only, which one would that be?
It would definitely be Shrapnel Method. I love playing with all the bands that I am affiliated with, but with Shrapnel Method, I feel like I can truly express myself through my music. We are soon bringing our debut album, and I am very excited for that.
We heard that you are an animal lover. Do you have any pets?
I do. I love my dog, Aurora very much. A friend had brought her to me when she got partially paralysed in an accident. I took care of her like my own child, and when she first stood up on her feet, I was in tears! She has fully recovered now, and has been a blessing in my life ever since. I also call her 'baby girl' sometimes (laughs).
What advice do you have for aspiring guitarists?
I struggled for more than 10 years in the industry before I finally 'made it'. I feel like when you grow as a musician, the period of struggle is a test for you. Never look down on any genre of music, play everything. If one manages to remain dedicated and patient throughout the said 'struggle,' that is when they will shine as musicians.
