Wakilur Rahman’s ‘There is no story’ underway at Shilpangan Gallery
Renowned artist Wakilur Rahman's solo exhibition, "There is no story" is currently underway at Shilpangan Gallery, Dhanmondi. The exhibition features 37 artworks by him, which are dominated by the essence of black and white shades. The event was inaugurated by artist Abul Baqr Alvi on February 9. Art critic Javed Jalil was also present.
Wakilur's fondness towards working with architectural space, which creates different patterns of alluring visuals as they uplift the beauty of placement and void among many other variables, are highlighted in nearly all the exhibited artworks.
Rahman shared that he has been quite productive during the months of isolation. During the pandemic, he discovered the beauty in different corners of his own house.
"The first two months were daunting", he said, "we were fearing something invisible and intangible, something we cannot see or touch and the experience was filled with terror but with time, I found the opportunity in it. I began to find different artistic narrations to the materials laying around my house." The artworks came to him naturally during these months. This led to the name, "There is no story".
"There are many artists whose lifestyles captivate me, however, speaking from my philosophical and artistic point of view, I find Buddhist aesthetics absolutely fascinating," he further added. "The minimalism in old Chinese and Japanese works, especially with paper and ink, never fails to enchant me."
In his latest project, Rahman tried to draw a connection between a mosquito net and its significance in our region. He artistically translated and correlated it with romance, sadness, bachelor life, and many other themes.
"Even though it is something very minor, I hope to showcase its importance in our lives, and all the different meanings the net holds, through my work," he said.
"There is no story" concludes on February 22.
