‘For we are distant’ – Dameer’s coup de grâce
For a musician as young as Dameer Khan, emotionally charged love ballads might be commonplace. However, it is the execution where the talented artiste proves why he is deemed as the future of the Bangladeshi music industry, in his latest EP – "For We Are Distant".
The EP contains 7 songs, each of which have their own twist on their indie-pop influences. "I started writing some of these songs when I was 17, so it was a huge sigh of relief when I was finally able to release them," says Dameer. "I am really enjoying the feedback that I have received."
The songs, some of which have been recorded in Germany, retain their claustrophobic bedroom vibes, as if it was written by a person exhausted with the menial nature of life as a teenager. This, for a long time has been what made Dameer relatable among Generation Z. One that particularly stands out is 'Amar Jaan', the music video of which the artiste dedicated to his parents. "I want to try new things with Bangladeshi music," he says. I want to innovate, and Amar Jaan brings together many different influences that I feel are really unique and personal."
The EP, available and Spotify and other major streaming platforms, has the potential to cross borders from Dameer's home studio in Kuala Lumpur to not only the sub-continental indie, scene, but the world. At the risk of crossing my boundaries as a 'neutral' writer, I would say that this is a coup de grâce to the mediocrity that has inhabited the virtual music space in our country.
