“Theatre is my first love” – Tamalika Karmaker

Having worked for theatre troupe Aranyak for 26 years, Tamalika Karmaker is a renowned name in theatre, film and television. The actor first came to prominence with Humayun Ahmed's Kothao Keu Nei, and went on to become a notable figure in the acting industry. The Daily Star recently caught up with Tamalika for a chat to talk about her return to the screen and more.

You performed in Aranyak's staging of 'Rarang' at Shilpakala Academy after an eleven month break. How was the response from the audience?

To be honest, the response was overwhelming and I felt, in that moment, that I cannot live without this love from the audience. Theatre is my first love, and I have prepared myself for this my entire life. I want to continue acting and working hard to earn the audience's appreciation and adoration.

How many times have you partook in 'Rarang'?

We have performed this play 184 times. There is no division in the country that we did not perform this in. Even in Kolkata, there is no mainstream stage that we didn't play Rarang on. Besides, the play has been showcased in Kerala, Delhi and even South Korea. I am also the choreographer of this play. My Guru, Mamunur Rashid, gave me this responsibility and I enjoy it immensely.

What does theatre mean to you?

It is my passion, dedication and my first love. Acting is not easy; you need to learn and grow every day. There is no end to growing as an artiste. I will never be able to leave theatre.

Tell us about your first play on stage.

Pathor was my first play, with which I started my journey 26 years ago. It was directed by renowned actor Azizul Hakim. After that, there was no play in Aranyak Natya Dal that I did not play a part in.

Are you working on any television projects for Eid ul Adha this year?

I am in talks with a few directors regarding this. Hopefully, I will be confirming shooting dates with some of them soon and be on your television screens in no time.
