Tribute to Sukanta and Jibanananda in Mymensingh
Sukanta Bhattacharya and Jibanananda Das, two bards of modern Bengali Literature were remembered at a discussion held at Govt Ananda Mohan College on October 22.
The teachers and students of Bengali Department of Govt Ananda Mohan College organised the programme.
Poets Shamim Siddique and Al Maksud, both teachers of the department took part in the discussion chaired by Prof Jannatul Ferdous, head of Bengali Department.
Associate Professors of the department, Md Kamrul Hasan, Umme Kulsum, Tofael Ahmed and Farzana Khanam; and lecturer Umme Salma, were present, among others at the discussion.
Terming Sukanta as one of the key figures of modern Bengali poetry, the speakers said that in a short span of his life he revealed his poetic genius and became one of the most popular Bengali poets of the 20th century.
The poetry of Sukanta is characterised by socialist concepts, patriotism and humanism which makes him distinctive from other contemporary poets, they said.
Jibanananda Das is considered a leading modern poet of post-Tagore and Nazrul era. He was extraordinary with variations of literary forms as a poet, writer, novelist and essayist, they said.
His poems on the nature and beauty of Bangladesh reveal his eternal devotion and love for the country, they said. We also find Jibanananda as a poet of romanticism and his evergreen poem “Banalata Sen” is a good example, they added.
Aysha Siddiqua and Waliullah, students of the department took part in a poetry recitation session from the works of Sukanta and Jibanananda.
