Benapole tense after clash

2 groups of workers explode bombs, trade bullets

Several hundred goods-laden trucks were stranded at Benapole Land Port as unloading of goods remained suspended following a clash between two groups of workers yesterday.

Shots were fired and crude bombs blasted during the clash that left two workers injured.

Port sources said there had been a longstanding conflict between the members of two Sramik unions of the port over establishing dominance there. Following this, the two groups were locked in a clash around 2:30pm yesterday.

The injured were admitted to Jessore General Hospital.

Apurbo Hasan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station, said additional police personnel were deployed at the port to avert further untoward incidents.
