Ctg doctor gets bail

A Chittagong court yesterday granted bail to a doctor who is one of the three Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) physicians sued for negligence in treatment in two separate incidents.

Metropolitan Magistrate Farid Alam passed the order after Dr Rana Chowdhury, an assistant registrar of the CMCH, appeared before the court, seeking bail in the case, said court sources.

On Wednesday, doctors in Chittagong city stopped working at private clinics, chambers and diagnostic centres in the port city, protesting two cases against the three physicians alleging negligence.

They called off their work stoppage on Sunday after Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin assured them of “clearing up misunderstandings between physicians and patients”.

Kazi Muttaki Ibnu Minan, additional deputy commissioner (prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said the court granted bail to Rana on a bond of Tk 5,000.

The court in its order said the bail will stay effective until the inquiry report is submitted to the court, said Minan.

On January 19, one Jebal Hossain, father of Nur Absar, lodged the case against Dr Rana on the negligence charge.

Absar had a hernia operation in October last year at the CMCH, according to the case statement.

Absar had a second operation at the same hospital next month as his pain increased, the statement said.

Later, he was admitted to a private clinic in the city where doctors found surgical gauze in his body, the statement added.

On January 10, Meherun Nesa, 22, niece of the expatriate welfare minister, died at a private clinic in Katalganj following a caesarean operation.

Her family filed a case against two doctors of the gynaecology department at the CMCH, alleging their negligence in treatment.
