Truck runs over, injures protester
A truck ran over a student demonstraing for road safety in Shanir Akhra in the capital at around 9:30am yesterday, angering the protertors demonstrators further.
Fortunately, Faisal, a 12th grader of Government Tolaram College in Narayanganj, escaped with only injuries as the wheels of the truck went over his lower body, his family said.
A viral video of the incident shows Faisal, 18, trying to stop the truck. At one point, the driver drove straight towards him.
He was first treated for injuries to his lips, hip joint and left leg at a hospital in Narayanganj. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors said he was out of danger.
Faisal's father Shamsul Alam said, “You have seen how my son was run overs. What is the point of demanding justice? I am just thankful to God that my son is alive.”
Police said they were trying to seize the truck and arrest the driver.
Students stop minister's car
Demonstrators stopped Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed's car for driving on the wrong side of a road near Bangla Motor around 1:45pm.
The protesters chanted slogans while surrounding the minister as he tried to talk to them, a witness said.
Caught in the act, the minister claimed that he came to talk to them.
His vehicle was later turned around at the students' request.
Cops don't need driving licences!
In several videos on social media, protesters were seen stopping police motorbikes at different parts of the city and asking to see their documents.
In one video, two policemen on motorbikes were stopped at Shahbagh by the protesting students. When asked to show documents, one police official said, “Policemen do not need licences”.
Pressed further, the policemen admitted that they did not have the papers.
Demonstrators also asked to see the papers of commoners driving motorbikes and public transport drivers in other areas, including Airport Road, Farmgate and Karwan Bazar.
Around 2:00pm, students stopped a police jeep at Bangla Motor and asked to see the driver's licence.
When the driver failed to show it, the protesters took him to the on-duty traffic inspector and requested a case be filed against the driver.
The traffic inspector said a senior official was inside the jeep and was going for official work. The students then let the vehicle go.
Transport workers beat up student
During a demo of transport workers, an altercation broke out between them and passengers of a bus at Mouchak area of Siddhirganj in Narayanganj around 11:00am, witnesses said.
At least four people, including a student, were assaulted by the workers and later handed over to the police, Abdus Sattar, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station.
The workers blocked Signboard Point in Siddhirganj around 8:30am.
They threatened not to ply their vehicles until their security was ensured but later withdrew it, said the OC.
Meanwhile, in Chashara intersection, after an altercation, protesting students surrounded Narayanganj City AL Vice President Gopinath Das and stopped him from leaving the area for about an hour, Narayanganj police said.
