Abdul Quader Mirza, younger brother of ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, yesterday decided to resign from his post in the AL. 

Quader Mirza was a member of Companiganj upazila unit of AL and is the incumbent mayor of Basurhat municipality.

He made the announcement of his resignation via Facebook live around yesterday noon.

Hours later around 3:00pm, The Daily Star correspondent talked to him over the phone.

"I have decided to quit as I am a victim of bad politics of Awami League," alleged Mirza, who had been serving as member of the upazila unit AL for around 27 years.

"I as well as my followers have become victims of attacks and false cases by rivals. But I did not get justice. Officials of the administration have harassed me and my followers in many ways," he claimed.

"Upazila nirbahi officer and OC (officer-in-charge) and inspector (investigation) of police station have kept insulting me though I am a politician of the ruling party and mayor of a municipality. I did not get relief from it," claimed Mirza.

"I was not insulted in such a way even when the Awami League was an opposition party," he said.

"I hold a post which is equivalent to a deputy secretary of the government. But the UNO misbehaves with me," claimed Mirza.

"I will not be involved anymore with the party that does not honour me … I have decided to resign from the party for these reasons," he said.

He also announced that he would neither be involved with any political party nor contest any election in future.

Mirza added that he has become a member of Bangabandhu Shikkha O Gobeshona Parishad and wants to work for the organisation now.

He also cited the names of multiple politicians and lawmakers of Noakhali and Feni, claiming that they were the masterminds of bad politics.

He urged the prime minister and AL chief Sheikh Hasina to punish them.

Mirza came to limelight after making comments against corruption and misdeeds committed by AL men in Noakhali and Feni for the last few months.

On multiple occasions, he even came down heavily on government officials for their alleged involvement with corrupt politicians. He also repeatedly criticised his brother Obaidul Quader and his wife for patronising corrupt politicians.

This made political situation of Companiganj volatile. Even, two deadly clashes took place there between two groups of AL over establishing supremacy.

In the clashes, two people -- local journalist Borhan Uddin Muzakkir and CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Alauddin -- were killed and several others injured.

One group was led by Mirza and another by Mizanur Rahman Badal, organising secretary of upazila unit AL.

In another development, a Noakhali court yesterday directed the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate the killing of Alauddin and submit the report before the court by June 1.

The court came up with the directive after hearing a case filed in connection with the killing.
