Reports on Noor Chy's expulsion false

Says law minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said the recent media report about the expulsion of Bangabandhu's self-confessed killer Noor Chowdhury from Canada was false.

“We contacted Bangladesh High Commission in Canada to know about the matter and our envoy told us that the report was not true. Our High Commission also contacted the Bangladesh desk at the Canadian foreign ministry, but didn't find the report to be authentic,” he told journalists at his secretariat office.

Recently a report appeared in media that Canada has cancelled an asylum plea of Chowdhury and ordered his deportation. The reporters enquired the minister about steps taken by the Bangladesh government to bring back the killer.

“Our efforts are still on to bring him back and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his recent visit to Canada talked to her counterpart Justin Trudeau regarding this. The meeting was very fruitful and the Canadian government was considering ways to send Chowdhury back to Bangladesh,” Anisul said.

About Canada's stance against death sentence, the minister said, “They have their constitutional obligations. They told our prime minister that they were considering ways to avoid those.”

Five of the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were hanged on January 28, 2010.

Another six death-row convicts -- Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, Noor Chowdhury, Moslemuddin, Rashed Chowdhury and Abdul Mazed -- are now hiding abroad. Their cohort Abdul Aziz Pasha died in Zimbabwe in 2001.
