Wife burnt to death by 'husband'

A man allegedly set his wife on fire in Sirajganj's Gopalpur village yesterday.

Sonia Khatun, 25, died at Enayetpur Khwaza Eunus Ali Medical College and Hospital hours later.

Neighbours said Jahangir Hossain splashed kerosene on Sonia and set her alight around 1:30pm on Tuesday.

The neighbours managed to take her to hospital, said Rashidul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Enayetpur Police Station.

Sonia's mother Nurunnahar Begun filed a case with Enayetpur Police Station yesterday accusing Jahangir.

“We are trying to arrest him,” the OC said.

Talking to journalists, Nurunnahar said Sonia got married to Jahangir, a handloom worker, five years ago but has been tortured at her in-laws' since.

“I demand exemplary punishment of the culprit,” she said.
