Housewife burnt in acid attack
A man threw acid on his wife yesterday at Demra in Dhaka Metropolitan Police, accusing her of an extramarital affair.
The victim, Jesmine Akhter, 26, a mother of three, sustained10 percent burns on her face, chest and hands, said Partha Shankar Paul, resident surgeon of the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted after the incident.
The couple were locked into an argument around 10:30am at their rented one-room house at Konapara of Demra. At one stage, her husband, Amir Hossain, a factory worker, brought out a small bottle of liquid from a showcase and splashed it on her face, Jesmine told reporters at the hospital.
Amir had quarreled with her frequently, suspecting her of having an illicit relationship, she said.
Maksuda Begum who lives in the adjacent room told The Daily Star that last week after a quarrel with her husband Jesmine left the house along with her children and went to her sister's.
She stayed there for four days and then her husband brought her back.
The neighbour said she heard the couple quarrelling yesterday again and after some time Jesmine screamed out.
She came out and saw Amir run out of their room after locking it from outside with a door chain, she said, adding that she opened the door and found that Jesmine was screaming with pain from burn injuries on different parts of her body.
