Speakers at a seminar in Chattogram yesterday evening said poetry contains philosophies and helps its readers conjure up images.

They were speaking in a seminar titled "The history of Doha [a form of poetry] and Doha of Yusuf Mohammad" organised by Dupurlata Sahitya Patrika at Bangabandhu Hall in Chattogram Press Club.

Professor Salimullah Khan, in the seminar, said, "Everyone who can speak is a poet."

He said those who practised the poetry of Doha in the Indian subcontinent were humanitarians, adding, poets who write Doha were liberal minded and mostly believe in monotheism.

In poetry, rhythm is more important than rhyme, he said, adding, many of Yusuf Mohammad's Dohas compel the reader to think deeply.

Poet Rizwan Mahmud said Yusuf Mohammad started writing poetry in 1970s and later ventured into writing Doha.

Poet Yusuf Mohammad was present at the seminar.
