Believing in Equality
Hiring women for managerial positions in restaurants is relatively a newly introduced phenomenon in our country. But Shaad Tehari Ghor, situated in Lalmatia, founded by Shahida Begum, has been practicing the hiring of women since it's inception in 1995.
Initially, Shaad was run by Shahida and a few of her relatives. She has recently handed over the responsibility to her niece, Samshin Nahar, to look after it.
Shaad Tehari Ghor was recognised for their unusual trend of hiring women. Now young girls feel that Shaad Tehari Ghor is one of the most secure places for a female employee. The positions of cashier, food server, caretakers and some more managerial positions, are filled by women. They all work in shifts, according to their comfort and adaptability.
"I have been working here as a cashier for the past six years," says Jhimi. "When I was looking for a job, my parents would accompany me to interviews for security," elaborates Jhimi. "Both my parents and I were impressed by the people here and trusted them enough." Like Jhimi, all employees, male and female, have a lot of advantages working in Shaad Tehari Ghor. The employees are provided with accomodation and meal plans by Shaad Tehari Ghor.
Shaad Tehari Ghor also has the reputation of practicing equality amongst their employees. Every employee enjoys similar privileges. Decisions to hire workers are not based on gender. Each employee is rewarded according to his or her performance.
In a country where discrimination against women is a common scenario, Shaad Tehari Ghor has proved its maturity and open mindedness long before this was witnessed elsewhere in the country. Through this practice of equality and respect for all genders, Shaad Tehari Ghor has become a milestone in the food arena, earning the respect of women all over the country as a safe and enjoyable working environment.
