Bogura student rape accused Tufan Sarker denied bail
The High Court today refused to grant bail to Bogura's Sramik League convenor Tufan Sarker in a sensational case filed for abducting and raping a female student and torturing her mother in 2017.
The bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim passed the order after holding a virtual hearing on a petition filed by Tufan Sarker seeking bail in the case.
Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star that Tufan cannot get released from jail following yesterday's HC order.
The court did not grant him bail considering the gravity of his offence.
Tufan on July 17, 2017 reportedly abducted the student from her home and raped her and then asked his party cadres and Bogura municipality woman councillor Marzia Akter to make sure everything was hushed up.
They picked up the student and her mother on July 26 the same year and tortured them for four hours and then shaved their heads.
Her mother then filed a rape and torture case against 10 people, including Tufan, his wife Asha Sarkar, Asha's elder sister and the councillor.
Police arrested Tufan on July 29, 2017 in connection with the case, DAG Bashir Ullah added.
