HC denies bail to Bogura student rape accused Tufan
The High Court today rejected a bail petition of Bogura town Sramik League convener Tufan Sarker in a case filed for abducting and raping a female student and torturing her mother in July, 2017.
It also asked the trial court concerned to finish the trial proceedings of the case in next six months.
The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman came up with the order after hearing the bail petition of Tufan in connection with the case.
Tufan’s lawyer Advocate Cumar Debul Dey told The Daily Star that his client cannot get released from jail following the HC order.
He also said Tufan will not move any petition before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC order, as he will wait for the trial court’s decision.
Tufan on July 17, 2017 reportedly abducted a female student from her home and raped her and then asked his party cadres and the woman councillor to make sure everything was hushed up.
They picked up the student and her mother on July 26 the same year tortured them for four hours and then shaved their heads.
Her mother then filed a rape and torture case with the against 10 people, including Tufan, his wife Asha Sarkar, and Asha's elder sister and Bogura municipality woman councillor Marzia Akter.
A Bogura court on January 22 this year rejected a bail petition of Tufan in this case.
