‘Mistrust over banking sector an ominous sign’
A slight mistrust has been created among the people over the country's banking sector in recent time, which is an "ominous sign" for the banks, Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir said today.
The banks have to take measures to ensure the corporate governance in a bid to resolve the problem, he said.
Kabir was addressing a conference titled "Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing" jointly orgnised by the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) and the Association of Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officers of Banks in Bangladesh at Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel in Dhaka.
The country's export has not increased so much in comparison to the higher import of industrial raw materials, he said.
He asked the bankers to follow a cautious policy in this regard.
Mobile financial service has been playing a key role in expediting the country's financial inclusion but misuse of the service is also occurring, Kabir said.
Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Abu Hena Mohd Razee Hasan, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit Adviser Deb Prasad Debnath and ABB Chairman Syed Mahbubur Rahman also addressed the conference.
