Bangladesh’s exports may rise as Trump considers tariffs on China, says top businessman
Bangladesh may see a surge in export orders and investments as US President-elect Donald Trump considers imposing higher tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the American market, according to a top businessman.
"The imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese goods by the Trump administration could prompt international businesses and investors to turn to Bangladesh," Ahsan Khan Chowdhury, chairman of Pran-RFL Group, said today.
Chowdhury made these remarks at the Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) and Pran-RFL Media Award ceremony held at the ERF office in the capital.
At the event, ERF and Pran-RFL honoured 10 journalists for their outstanding reporting on the agriculture sector.
"The Netherlands, despite being a small country, exports agricultural products worth $100 billion annually, and Thailand exports $36 billion. However, Bangladesh's agricultural exports stand at only $1 billion, highlighting significant room for growth," Chowdhury added.
Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin also noted that the trade tension between the US and China could create opportunities for Bangladesh.
"However, Bangladesh must enhance its competitiveness to attract more foreign direct investment and increase exports," he said.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, and Muhammad Abdullah, managing director of the Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust, also spoke.
