Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has criticised the Centre for Policy Dialogue's recommendation to increase government monitoring on inbound remittances worth over $5,000.

"What is the problem with the CPD if migrants' send their income to the country in a legal way?" the minister questioned.

Earlier expatriates used to send remittances through legal and illegal channels, he said.

The government wants the inbound remittance through legal channels to rise and it has risen in recent times, the minister said.

"Those who have the money will send the remittance. If anyone sends money complying all the rules is good for the country. I don't know what is bothering them [CPD] here."

Kamal made the comments in a press briefing today after a meeting of the cabinet committee on public purchase when journalists want to know his reaction on the CPD's call to increase monitoring on the source of inward remittances of over $5,000.

The minister said the government currently has no plan to increase the rate of incentive from the existing 2 per cent to the ones who remit below $500 as per Bangladesh Bank's recent recommendation.

"Export remittance declined in July. Shipment experienced a fall because of the lockdown. Export remittance will rise in the future if vaccines can be administered according to the plan."
