Leaders of the Executive Committee of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Investors Association (BEZIA) recently met with Ashik Chowdhury, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), at the InterContinental Dhaka to discuss pressing challenges facing economic zones.

Led by BEZIA President MA Jabbar, the delegation voiced serious concerns regarding the recent imposition of broad-based US tariffs and the hike in gas prices by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), warning of their potential adverse impact on investment, production costs, and export competitiveness.

The association underscored the urgent need for uninterrupted and high-quality electricity and high-pressure gas supplies across all economic zones, according to a press release.

They also advocated for permission to establish captive power plants where necessary to ensure operational continuity.

Further demands included the rapid development of access roads, internal infrastructure, drainage systems, and essential amenities such as worker housing and labour transportation.

BEZIA leaders also called for the removal of service charges imposed by utility providers, the bankability of leased land to facilitate investor financing, and the calculation of annual lease rentals only after the full completion of common facilities and utility services.

Additionally, they requested the timely handover of developed plots to unit investors and the exemption of the 3 percent tax on LC payments for polyester yarn, a vital input in the textile and garment industry.

Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury attentively listened to the concerns raised and assured the delegation that BEZA would engage constructively with relevant authorities to address the issues in a collaborative and solution-oriented manner.

Sharif Zahir and Rupali H Chowdhury, vice-presidents of the association, along with other representatives, were also present.
