JnU second campus project handed over to army verbally: VC
The second campus project of Jagannath University (JnU) has been verbally handed over to the Bangladesh Army, the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Md Rezaual Karim said today.
The army will finalise the takeover process within three working days, he added.
The VC disclosed this information following a meeting with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and army representatives at the Ministry of Education.
The latest development came after the students went on a hunger strike to press home their three-point demand.
However, they called off the protest yesterday evening, 35 hours after the JnU authorities assured them of meeting two of their demands.
The first phase of the project is already underway. The army representatives will now visit the campus to review progress and identify any issues. They will also prepare a roadmap and revise the Development Project Proposal (DPP) if necessary, the VC said.
JnU also sought the army's assistance in constructing the steel-structured buildings for Bani Bhaban and Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, he informed.
"The army has given preliminary approval for these projects as well. They will visit these sites soon, which is a significant milestone for us," he added.
The VC urged the protesting students to end their ongoing shutdown of the campus.
"We acknowledge the students' efforts and thank the government for addressing our concerns. We urge the students to withdraw the shutdown for the benefit of all," he said.
However, the protesting students stated they would not call off the shutdown without written assurances.
Moniruzzaman Monir, a representative of the protesters, said, "The shutdown will continue until we receive written confirmation. We also request everyone to refrain from holding processions or demonstrations during this time."
Prof Rezaul clarified that a revised DPP would be prepared for all pending and ongoing works related to the first phase of the second campus. He added that the second phase work will proceed after receiving approval from the Ministry of Education.
