Hoping High with Golden Fibre
Jute growers across the country are upbeat about the good yield and price of the natural fibre this year. They said increased acreage and good price would help them recoup some of the losses they incurred in the previous years. Farmers grew this long and shiny natural fibre, which produce both soft and coarse yarn, in 7.96 lakh hectares of land this season, up 10 percent from last year's jute acreage, said a provisional estimate by the Department of Agricultural Extension. Farmers and traders remain busy around this time of the year in various post-harvest activities. They soak the fibre in water bodies for a couple of weeks, sundry them and then take the produce to markets for sale.
