11 ‘robbers’ held in Dhaka
Detective Branch of police arrested 11 members of a “robber gang” from Sayedabad area of Dhaka last night.
The arrestees were identified as Rafiqul Islam alias Babu, Hafizur Rahman alias Sumon, Atiqul Islam Khan alias Alauddin, Safi alias Babul, Kamrul Islam, Alamgir Gazi alias Pata, Abdul Jalal Sheikh, Sohel Rana alias Joy, Tazrul Islam, Md Manik and Abdul Khaleq Howladher.
A team of police’s detective branch (DB) arrested them from Sayedabad around 23:00pm just moments before they were planning to conduct robbery in a shop in Sayedabad bus depot, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
They used to commit robbery at different places in Bangladesh and India, DB police sources said.
Apart from robbery, they also used to cheat targeted wealthy people by bringing them into different rented flats in Dhaka through luring them with girls.
The DB team also recovered a pipe gun, three rounds Kartuz, five machete, three knives, one iron rod, one electric machine, 10 grill cutters and a truck.
In primary interrogation, the arrestees admit that they gathered in Sayedabad bus depot area to conduct robbery in road side shops.
They used to conduct robbery in different household and business house in Dhaka, Jessore, Bagerhat and Patuakhali district, DB police sources said.
They tried to conduct robbery in a wholesale cloth shop in Cumilla on March 16 and Tazmahal market in Moulvibazar on March 18, but their attempts failed due to police vigilance, they said.
“The robbers used to conduct robbery even in Kolkata, Bongaon, Krishnanagar and Shiliguri after crossing the borderline of the country,” the DB sources added.
