From now on, the traffic department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is going to observe traffic week every month to encourage people to follow traffic rules and improve traffic discipline.

In line with the initiative, the traffic department is all set to observe a traffic week starting from tomorrow to March 23.

The authorities have decided to observe traffic discipline week every month in suitable timeframe in order to improve the situation, Mir Rezaul Alam, additional commissioner DMP (Traffic), told The Daily Star.

Although the members of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Rover Scout, BNCC and Bangladesh Girl Guides members were involved with the traffic police to make people aware about traffic law, this time no volunteers will be involved with the traffic week activities, the police official said.

"We will involve additional police force from the Public Order Management (POM) instead of the volunteers as they are busy with classes and exams," he added.

Earlier, in order to improve the traffic condition and traffic discipline, traffic week was held in the city from 5 to 14 August last year. The initiative was Inspired by last year's student movement for road safety.

On July 29 last year, students took to the streets after the death of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College on Airport Road. They were seen managing traffic on main roads for nine days.

Police later welcomed the student movement and initiated traffic awareness programme.

The DMP later continued its traffic awareness programme followed by 5 to 30 September as traffic awareness month, from October 24 to 31 as traffic discipline week and January 15 to February 2 as traffic fortnight for strict implementation of traffic law.
