Cops to arrest fugitive city polls candidates: DMP
Dhaka Metropolitan Police are trying to arrest the fugitives accused in criminal cases, who are contesting Dhaka City Corporation elections without securing bail, a DMP official said today.
“There are criminal cases against at least seven mayoral hopefuls and around 250 councillor candidates. Of them, some are on bail and some are fugitive,” Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of DMP, told reporters after a press briefing at the DMP media centre.
Those who are yet to secure bail are wanted, he said.
The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation are scheduled to be held on April 28.
‘NO ARREST WITHOUT REASON’
Police will not arrest any BNP leader without specific reason, Sanaullah Miah, a lawyer of pro to BNP told The Daily Star today after meeting DMP authorities.
A team of pro-BNP lawyers, led by Mahbubuddin Khokon, met DMP police Commissioner Mohammad Asaduzzaman Miah at his office this noon.
Afterwards, Sanaullah said: “Police will not arrest any BNP leader under section 54.”
Police also said to have committed not to arrest any BNP leader who is on the way to secure bail from court or from the jail gates.
Mirza Abbas, BNP tent candidate for Dhaka south city polls, has at least cases against him including an arrest warrant in one filed by Anti-Corruption Commission.
