Graft case: SC upholds 3-yr jail for Alamgir’s son
The Supreme Court today upheld the three-year jail sentence of former Awami League lawmaker Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir’s son Joy Alamgir in a corruption case.
The apex court scrapped a High Court verdict that had acquitted Joy of the corruption charge.
A four-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order following an appeal filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the HC verdict.
The SC said Joy can move an appeal before the HC against the lower court verdict that had sentenced him to a three-year imprisonment, ACC’s lawyer Sayed Mamun Mahbub told The Daily Star.
The SC considers Joy as a fugitive, he said.
Muhiuddin's sons Jalal Alamgir and Joy Alamgir convicted and sentenced to three years in jail by a special court on November 5 in 2008 for not submitting wealth statements to the ACC.
Following two separate writ petitions filed by Muhiuddin, the HC on February 15, 2010 declared the lower court judgement illegal and acquitted Jalal and Joy of the charges.
The ACC later on filed an appeal with the SC challenging the HC verdict.
The apex court exempted Jalal of the case as he died abroad.
The ACC filed the cases with Gulshan Police Station on June 11, 2008 against Jalal and Joy for not submitting wealth statement to the commission.
