JU students protest ‘sexual harassment’ by teacher
Jahangirnagar University students today formed a human chain on the campus demanding punishment of the teacher who allegedly sexually harassed a student.
The demonstrators under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council) gathered in front of the Central Shaheed Minar around 2:00pm in order to press home their demand.
During the programme that lasted for around half an hour, they demanded exemplary punishment of Sanwar Siraj, an assistant professor at government and politics department.
Shakil-uz-Zaman, one of the protesters and the convener of the platform, said there are many scandals against Sanwar Siraj. “Such immoral person cannot be the guide for the students and the nation,” he said.
The victim, a student of the same department, tried to commit suicide by swallowing a large number of sleeping pills on Monday due to the “mental trauma” she was going through.
Earlier on September 19, she filed a complaint to the department head, detailing how Sanwar Siraj, who was her course instructor, harassed her.
