Newborn, who showed signs of life during burial, finally dies

The newborn baby, who showed signs of life during her burial yesterday, finally died at Dhaka Shishu Hospital early today.

The infant, named Meem, breathed her last at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital around 1:33am, Dr Md Abdul Aziz, professor and director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, said at a press conference arranged at the Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital.

Meem was showing signs of improvement until 7:00pm yesterday, but her condition started to deteriorate from then on before she passed away, Md Abdul Aziz said.

“We tried our best to save her,” said Md Abdul Aziz.

“A seven-member board was supposed to be formed this morning, but the child passed away early today,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim had called the hospital yesterday and asked them to provide utmost care to the baby, said Md Abdul Aziz.

The infant was declared dead by Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) authorities after she was delivered yesterday morning around 8:00am DMCH. She was the first child of Minhaz Uddin and Sharmin Akhter, both garment workers.
