60 BRTC buses for garment workers’ Eid travel
Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), for the first time, has allocated 60 buses for the transportation of garments workers during Eid rush.
The state-run corporation took the special initiative following a request from the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), a BRTC official said.
Among 60 buses, 30 buses will remain stand by at Gazipur Chowrasta on June 3 while 30 others have already been sent to different BRTC depots, Moniruzzaman Babu, deputy general manager (operation) of BRTC, told The Daily Star today.
He said around 1,150 BRTC buses will provide services during Eid across the country and the number may increase if more new buses, which will come from India, reach Dhaka before Eid.
A huge number of garments workers in Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj leaves Dhaka just one or two days before of Eid, putting huge pressure on transport.
Road Transport and Bridges Ministry has already written to Commerce Ministry and top business bodies including BGMEA to give leave to garments workers on different days aiming to ease the pressure.
