Bringing smiles to street children

A group of youngsters has arranged new clothes for underprivileged children in Savar to help them celebrate Eid.

Under the banner of “Sahamarmita Foundation”, the youths sit in open space which they consider a shop titled “Hashir Dokan” (shop of smile). For each clothe, they take Tk 1 as token money.

Every day, they change spot where street children -- many of them with their guardians -- gather to collect clothes.

Bulbuli Begum, a mother of three children, was found at the shop on National Memorial premises on Thursday. Before finding the youths -- all are school- and college-goers -- the woman was worried about how she would purchase clothes.

“Now I am happy,” said a smiling Bulbuli, after buying clothes for each of her children. Her husband is a rickshaw-puller.

The organisation gathered various kinds of clothes there. Komola Bewa bought two T-shirts for her grandchild. The 60-year-old said they went there as they are not able to buy attire from market.

“I thank the youths for this good initiative,” said Komola.

Robin, a street child, bought a shirt from Hashir Dokan and he was smiling. Like him, more than 50 children did so after buying clothes at Tk 1.

Talking to The Daily Star, Parvez Hasan, founder of Sahamarmita Foundation, said they took the initiative to bring smiles to underprivileged children’s faces. “We will sell nearly 500 clothes ahead of Eid,” he said.

The voluntary organisation was launched in January this year. It works for welfare of poor children. Currently, the foundation has 125 members across the country, said Parvez.
