Two people were killed and two others sustained burn injuries in a fire at a scrap metal shop in the capital's New Market area early yesterday.

The deceased were Amjad, 22, a worker of the shop; and Sohag, 20.

Mehedi Hasan, 20, and Yasin, 25, are being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Al Amin, station officer at Polashi Fire Station, told The Daily Star that the fire, which started around 1:40am, might have originated from a mosquito coil while the four were sleeping in the tin-roofed shop of one Beauty.

Among the four, locals had rescued two before fire fighters reached there while the other two after the blaze was doused in half an hour, he said.

Of them, Amjad and Sohag, however, died later.
