Ex-HC official gets 6 yrs for amassing wealth

A Dhaka Court today sentenced a former official of the High Court to six years' and his wife to three years’ imprisonment each in connection with a case filed for amassing illegal wealth.

Golam Faruk, a former administrative officer of the HC, and his wife Syeda Mamtaj were awarded the jail sentence in absentia.

Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Judge Court-5 fined the former HC official over Tk 70.51 lakhs. His wife was also fined Tk 10 lakhs on the ground that the latter assisted his husband in acquiring the illegal wealth.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge ordered.

THE CASE

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Ramna Model Police Station on June 14, 2012. Police pressed charges against the duo on June 2, 2013. They were indicted on December 29, the same year.
