Man held with illegal firearms from Lalbagh
A man in possession of two illegal firearms and seven rounds of bullet was arrested from Lalbagh yesterday on suspicion that he was planning violence centring the upcoming city elections.
Ashiqur Rahman (30) was held from Shaheb Bazar area after police searched his bag and found two unregistered firearms, Abdul Baten, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Daily Star.
The firearms are likely to have been brought from the bordering area in Jashore with plans to be sold in Dhaka, the police official said.
They also suspect the firearms would be used during election day or while election campaigning to create fear or impose superiority of certain candidates.
Meanwhile Additional Deputy Commissioner of DB Saifur Rahman Azad said the arrestee also gave them names of some people who are trying to purchase firearms.
