Into the mystic
The three-day death anniversary programme in memory of mystic poet Lalon Shah ended with speakers emphasising the need to look back to Lalon's philosophy, especially the humanitarian aspect, through more research.
The programme chalked out on the occasion of 128th death anniversary of Lalon was held at Chheuria Lalon Akhra in Kushtia from Tuesday to Thursday (October 16-18).
Bauls in thousands and Lalon admirers from home and abroad flocked to Lalon's den during the event. The programmes included a “Lalon Mela”, discussion and rendition of songs by artistes of Lalon Academy and bauls.
At the discussion, Lalon researcher Deborah Zannat Cukierman, a French national, said, “Lalon's philosophy of humanity, love and unity is universal.”
“I was a school teacher in France. Some three years ago, I heard a Lalon song on YouTube," she said.
“I was amazed how a person with no institutional education can propagate such moral values and ethics,” she added.
Passion for folk music and curiosity about the mystic sage brought her to Bangladesh.
She said she has been researching on Lalon at Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia for the last two years.
Lalon researcher Hans Krsithi, who came from the Czech Republic, said, “He [Lalon] is not only about music, but also about living from a holistic view.”
“Initially, it might seem that his songs are advocating religious ideologies. But, when you get to the final verses, you will see criticism of superstitions and communalism. The songs also suggest protesting ignorance and inequality, and adopting simple lifestyle,” Krsithi added.
Lalon Academy organises the programme every year in association with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, while Kushtia district administration supervises the event.
Lawmaker Mahbubul Alam Hanif of Kushtia-3 inaugurated the programme, attended by Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu.
The minister urged all to practice Lalon's philosophy for building a non-communal Bangladesh.
Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Aslam Hossain presided over the event.
