Pay disparity: BSMMU teachers mull stopping treatment

Agitating teachers under the banner of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA) are considering tougher programmes over the new pay scale dispute.

“We are providing treatment facilities, considering the patients. But some of our doctors are unhappy enough to stop all sorts of treatment until the discrimination in the new pay scale is resolved,” Prof Kanak Kanti Barua, president of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Teachers’ Association, told The Daily Star today.

Earlier, a large portion of the BSMMU teachers held a meeting at Milton Hall of the university with Kanak Kanti Barua in the chair.

“We expect that the government would offer an acceptable solution in the shortest possible time to end the dispute,” he added.

Holding the bureaucratic complexity responsible for the deadlock, Barua said: “We have already boycotted classes. Even examination schedules are being affected. We expect the government would reach an honourable solution immediately.”

FBUTA Secretary General ASM Maksud Kamal, who attended the meeting, said: “We have been carrying out soft programmes for the last eight months to ensure our dignity in the new pay scale but denied.”

“We will go for tougher programmes to meet our demand,” he warned.
