Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a human chain on the university campus today demanding removal of the vice chancellor (VC) and pro-VC on different charges.

Under the banner of “Teachers’ Society Against Corruption”, more than 50 teachers and a section of students formed the human chain around 11:00am on Paris Road of the university.

In the human chain, the speakers demanded resignation of RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan for his “Jai Hind” remark at an international conference titled ‘Education: From the Perspective of a People’s State’ jointly organised RU’s History department and Mass History Centre at the university’s Tazuddin Senate Building on September 26.

They also demanded removal of Pro-VC Prof Choudhury Zakaria, after an audio clip of a conversation surfaced, where he was found involved in “fixing money” to recruit a teacher.

However, RU VC Prof Sobhan in a statement said that he just made the remark to express gratitude to India and its people for their continuous cooperation in the country’s progress and their contribution and support in the country’s independence in 1971.

He said that he did not say anything which goes against the country and the government.
