UN envoy on int'l migration due today
United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for International Migration Peter Sutherland arrives in Dhaka on Tuesday on a three-day visit.
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque and other officials will receive Sutherland at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the evening, Foreign Ministry sources said.
He will address a public event at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) on January 21 with focus on migration issue.
On January 20, Sutherland will meet Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
Appointed in January 2006, Sutherland supported the UN Secretary-General in promoting the United Nations agenda on international migration prior to and during the 2006 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development.
With the Secretary-General, he proposed and advocated for the creation of the State-led Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), which now attracts over 150 countries annually to advance international cooperation on migration.
Bangladesh will host the 9th meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) this year.
