‘Criminal’ killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’ with Rab
A suspected criminal was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Tongi upazila of Gazipur early today.
Deceased Jewel Hasan, 25, was an accused in five cases including two of murders. He was also accused in a case filed for torturing his wife, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
Rab-1 members conducted a raid in Tongi river port area around 3:30am after receiving information that criminals were taking preparation to commit crime there, Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of Rab Legal and Media wing, told the daily.
Sensing presence of the elite force, the alleged criminals opened fire on the team that triggered a “gunfight”.
Jewel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, the daily said.
Two Rab members – Sub-inspector Mahbubur Rahman and Sepoy Md Jashim Uddin -- sustained minor injuries. They received first primary treatment from Tongi Government Hospital.
The body of Jewel was kept at the Tongi Police Station.
