4 to die for rape, murder of Manikganj schoolgirl

A Manikganj court today sentenced four people to death for killing a fourth-grader after raping her in Singair upazila of Manikganj in 2008.
The convicts are Enamul, Ramadan, Hakim and Faizul of Waijnagar village and their ages are between 30 and 32, our Manikganj correspondent reports quoting a public prosecutor.
Ali Hossain, judge of Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, handed down the verdict in the presence of convict Hakim. The three other convicts are on the run.
The court also acquitted three accused from the charge as the allegation brought against them could not be proved, said AKM Nurul Huda Rubel, special public prosecutor of the tribunal.
According to the prosecution, the four accused kidnapped Romana Akhter, a class-IV student local Brac School, on the way to her school on July 16, 2008 and killed her after a gang-rape.
The body of Romana was found at a jute field at Nurul Haq Master about 200 yards away from the school on the same day.
Romana’s uncle Kadam Ali filed a case with the Singair Police Station that day.
After the investigation, police submitted the charge sheet against before the court against seven persons.
After examining 15 witnesses, the judge of the court awarded death penalty to the four of the seven accused, the public prosecutor added.
