40km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway
A 40-kilometre tailback ensued on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway from Eliotganj to Meghna Bridge since early today, throwing thousands of commuters into sufferings.
Bangla daily ProthomAlo reports, the tailback ensued since 4:00am, compelling the vehicles on the road to a complete halt, and started to ease out around four hours later.
Md Lavlu Mia, driver of ‘Janata Paribahan’ said, “I got stuck at Gauripur of Daudkandi at 4:00am and vehicles started to move at snail’s pace after 8:30am.”
The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students suffered the most due to the tailback. Today is the practical exam of Agriculture Studies.Several hundred students of Kauadi Lower Senior Fazil Madrasa were seen running towards their exam centres.
Another driver of a covered van Badal Mia told the daily that he could not reach Dhaka before 6:00am, so he will have to wait at the highway before Kanchpur all day as there is restriction of such vehicles to enter Dhaka City.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Daudkandi Highway Police Station Kamrul Hasan said, the tailback was triggered by the renovation work on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
