8 held over Jubo League attack on Chandpur students
Police detained a total of eight persons today in connection with the attack on Chandpur high school students by the ruling party’s youth front Jubo League.
They were held after a case was filed by Bhuiyara High School Headmaster Dulal Chandra Sarker, reports our Chandpur correspondent.
The detainees are: Monir, 25, Liton, 26, Mozammel Haque, 22, Alauddin, 32, Md Sobuj, 19, Oji Ullah, 32, Md Imran Hossain, 16, and Popy Akhter, 15.
Among the detainees, Monir and Liton, both are accused in the case, were arrested from a Dhaka-bound launch in Mohonpur area, said Motlob Uttar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman.
Among the other arrestees, Mozzammel is a student of Palakhal Degree College while Imran and Popy, sister of one Faruk who is a named accused in the case, are students of Bhuiyara High School.
They will be produced before a local court after primary quizzing, said Chandpur superintendent of police Md Abdul Hanif.
Jubo League had demanded Tk 15,000 from the school in Kachua upazila for August 15 programmes of national mourning day. Denied, they assaulted a teacher of the school on Friday.
The school students marched yesterday protesting the assault on teacher and the extortion attempt. Local followers of the ruling Awami League swooped on the protesting students, leaving at least 40 students injured.
The headmaster of the school filed a case in this regard last night – accusing eight named persons including Farukh, Liton and Manir along with about 20 other anonymous people.
