5 ‘int’l human organ traffickers’ placed on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court today granted three-day remand against each of the five people held in connection with a case filed against them for their alleged involvement with international human organ trafficking syndicate.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibul Haque passed the order after police produced them before it with 10-day remand prayer against each of them. The case was lodged with Shahbagh Police Station.

The five were held from Gabtoli and Dhaka University’s Bangla Academy areas last night, Muntasirul Islam, deputy commissioner (media), of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detective branch, said.

The detainees are said to be brokers involved in purchase and sale of human kidney. Two people were said to have been rescued from their possession.

The detainees were Abdul Jalil, allegedly the mastermind of the trafficking operation and engaged in the business for a long time, Sheikh Jakir, Ashiqur Rahman alias Jebin, Fazle Rabbi and Zihan Rahman.

Those rescued were Abu Hasan, from Joypurhat who was lured into selling his kidney in promise of a new CNG auto-rickshaw, and Mahbubur Rahman.

During primary interrogation, Jalil said to have confessed his role into the incident and revealed that the kidneys were meant to be transported to India.

A few years ago, organ trafficking saw a boom in the relatively poorer northern districts. Brokers there lured victims with money, in most of the instances, to take away their kidneys. Sometimes, victims were even kidnapped and killed.
