A five-year-old boy drowned in an abandoned well dug for setting up a water pump in Tongi upazila of Gazipur this morning.
Romanur Rahman, 5, was a student at Hyderabad Ideal School and College, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
Two minor students including Romanur fell into the well when they were playing near it inside the school boundary in Sukandibagh area around 10:00am, according to our correspondent.
On information, members of Gazipur Fire Services and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and managed to pull out the duo.
Both the children were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared Romanur dead, Gazipur’s Fire Services and Civil Defence deputy assistant director (DAD) Akhtaruzzaman said.
Fire services and locals said the well where the duo fell into was dug two years ago for setting up a water pump for the school.
Later, it was filled with sand and left abandoned. The sand was washed away due to heavy rainfall in the last two days, they said.
