ACC is not powerless: Chairman

The recently appointed chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today said that the anti-graft body possesses adequate power, but the power is not utilised.

“The commisison is not powerless. It has adequate power, which is not utilised,” ACC chief Iqbal Mahmud said while addressing an ward-giving ceremony at ACC’s Segunbagicha office.

“Many people including journalists think the Anti-Corruiption Commisison is powerless, but I don’t want to say this,” said Mahmud.

“Many of the speakers said during today’s programme that there are “ghosts” in the commission. I also do not disagree with them. But I will drive out these ghosts,” he insisted.

The ACC chief sought help of the media in doing so.

Pointing out that charge sheets are given in only 30-40 percent cases filed by the commission, Mahmud said that the anti-graft body would submit charge sheets of all cases from now on.

Quoting relevant laws, the ACC chairmna said the commission was formed to prevent corruption. “We are focusing on preventing corruption.”

He said the commission would adopt long-, mid- and short-term strategies to instill values among the young generation about preventing corruption.
