The children, all aged between four and eight, are now receiving treatment at Bangladesh institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (BITID) in Fouzderhat, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting Medical Officer of Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex Dr Abdus Salam Chowdhury.

Meanwhile, a medical team from Dhaka went to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and BITID where a total of 52 children are being treated.

The team collected blood and serum samples from the affected children, the correspondent said quoting Faruk Ahmed Bhuiyan, chief scientific officer of Institute of Epidemiology and Disease Control and Research in Dhaka.

“The children are malnourished but the main cause can be ascertained after conducting the test,” Faruk said.

The children in the remote hilly area were suffering from the disease which could not be identified yet, Chittagong Civil Surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddique told The Daily Star yesterday.

The victims started having fever a week ago. The other symptoms include body rash, breathing problems, vomiting and blood in stool, say locals and doctors.
