Murder accused killed in Mymensingh ‘gunfight’
An accused of a murder case was killed in a “gunfight” with detectives in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh early today.
Police identified the deceased as Abdur Razzaq, 40, son of Abdul Latif of Chhoto Labonkhola village in Barguna district.
Razzaq was an accused in a case filed with Phulpur Police Station in connection with the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Alim Uddin, our Mymensingh correspondent reports quoting AKM Mahbub Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Alim Uddin, 40, of Sherpur went missing on March 21 along with his CNG-run auto-rickshaw and his body was recovered from Shahpur area of Phulpur the following day, the OC said.
Detective Branch of police arrested a person for his alleged involvement with the killing, the OC said adding that the arrestee, in his statement, revealed the name of Razzaq as his accomplice.
Based on the statement, a team of DB led by its Officer-in-Charge Md Ashiqur Rahman raided Gudaria area on Mymensingh-Sherpur road to arrest Razzaq around 4:30am today.
Sensing presence of police, Razzaq and his cohorts fired several rounds of bullets at the police team. In retaliation, police also shot 10 bullets triggering a “gunfight.
Razzaq was hit by bullets in his chest during the alleged gunfight, OC Ashiqur said.
Razzaq was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital(MMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries.
Two policemen -- Assistant Sub-Inspector Zinnat Hasan Manik and Constable Rashidul Islam -- were also injured during the incident and are undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital.
